Pirates, curses, treasure and action around every corner! Why, it's Walt Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean," another movie based on a popular attraction at the studio's theme park. However, with a creative story and colorful characters, the words "based on a ride" are blown out of the water and make for an interesting swashbuckling adventure.

Set on in the seas of the Caribbean, the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann (Jonathan Pryce) has always dreamt of meeting a pirate. Her name is Elizabeth Swann (Kiera Knightley), a beautiful woman being courted by Royale Island's Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport) and secretly loved by blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). Elizabeth owns a dabloon that was part of a long lost pirate treasure found by the crew of the legendary ship, the Black Pearl. Legend has it that it's crew stumbled upon a curse and become walking skeletons during the night. When marooned Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) (actually, former captain) of the Black Pearl makes his way to the island, he seeks the dabloon and young Will Turner. However, the crew of the Black Pearl aren't far behind, and they need Will to break off the curse that turns them into the zombified damned. The now Captain Barbossa kidnaps Elizabeth, who uses Will's last name for some odd reason, and plans to use her to alter the curse. When hearing the news of her kidnapping, the British Navy decides to seek her by themselves. But Will Turner uses Jack Sparrow to help find her, ruining his name and finding out that his father, who was once conceived as being a man of good will and honesty, was actually a daring pirate named "Bootstrap" Will Turner. Will's blood is needed to alter the curse, and Sparrow devises several plans to bring Elizabeth to safety, Will to his pirate roots and claim back the ownership of the Black Pearl.

The story line behind Gore Verbinski's adaptation is daring yet works very well. However, the animation for the zombified crew could have been MUCH better. They look like watery characters from the Pixar movies. Also, the fact that Disney was behind the whole project meant that they would find some way to take away from all of the action and sword play. Although it is rated PG-13, it is obvious Disney wanted its younger viewers to be the sole audience for the film. One liners, dimwitted comedy and typical Disney style, no-laughs-above-the-age-of-13, humor plague the film and lead off of the good story and intriguing premise. Johnny Depp also used Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger as inspiration for the movement of Captain Jack Sparrow. However, the movement is just ridiculous and happens to draw from Depp's charisma. The camera work is also a bit shakey, making some of the fight sequences a bit unorganized.

Going along the lines in terms of set structure and length as some of the modern action movies set back in the 1700s, "Pirates" happens to be one of the most daring of them all. Imagine, turning a simple attraction into a $100 million bargain with the devil (I'm sure you all know about the pirate box office curse). With a good concept, perhaps a bit more time in the editing room and some anti-Disney lines could make the film a must see. Now that would be something to be proud of.

My Score: 7 (out of 10)

I am beginning to believe that critics wouldn't know a good film even if it bit them in the arse! This move is great and just plain FUN! I love Johnny Depp and I think all of the actors did a phenominal job. It's been a long time since a FUN movie like this has been out. Matter of fact, I am off to see it a 7th time! My Rating A++!

OUTSTANDING!!! I'm with Katherine and Jose...one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Depp's movements, comedy and expressions give charm, bravery and elegance befitting the role of Captain. By the way, Depp's mannerisms more closely resemble Errol Flynn of years gone by than anyone else. (Flynn was the original "Sinbad the Sailor.") Granted, the skeleton crew could have been more believable - and spookier - but overall, this did not affect my high rating. Bloom gave an effective performance, as did the actor who played Captain Barbossa. All others performed quite well. This movie will bring out the kid and sense of adventure in most everyone, and it will become one of my all time favorites too!

This movie was just so much FUN! I laughed and laughed (and I am *way* over 13). So many things were either verbal or visual jokes. I jumped out of my seat twice. It's the best movie I've seen in years! I'm going to see it again this weekend. By the way, DON'T LEAVE UNTIL THE END OF THE CREDITS, or you'll miss something very interesting. The musical score was so good that I've already ordered it at Amazon.

I disagree with Boyd's comments about the film's allegedly "dimwitted" comedy. I thought it was altogether brilliant, and that those "one-liners" were essential to lightening up the otherwise dark and mildly depressing atmosphere that the story creates. Depp's performance was spectacular (as always), and the younger actors- Bloom and Knightley- were nothing less than perfect for their respective roles. Truly a great film; I give it an A+++.

I agree with Katherine L H.. This Movie is a must see for anyone who likes to go to the theatre. I am now making this my favorite movie of all time. I really, really can't wait till it comes out on DVD or VHS. I will be one of the first ones to buy it, right when it comes out I'm going to go buy it. I watched this movie three times already in the theatre. It was so good... They should make a second movie. I would give it 10 stars if it was possible. It was a really great Movie.

I enjoyed the movie, it was what I expected, I only wish it would of had what I didn't expect. The flamboyant way Depp portrayed the pirate Jack was great though, he is a freak. I love him, he gave me the "unexpected" part in the movie.

YOU WERE SO CRUEL IN PARTS TO THE ACTORS. I think that they did and amazing job and really Orland Bloom can act and he is a cutie and I don't care whether or not you think he can act! Johnny Depp also did an amazing job and did not "KILL" the role in anyway! so ha!

While it is true that Disney has watered down the action for younger viewers, the movie is still entertaining and well worth seeing. Visually, the film is well done and captures that "pirate feel" without seeming too campy or too much like the Disneyland attraction. My two biggest gripes would be that the character Elizabeth Swann (played by Kiera Knightley) is in this movie waaay too much. Her part seems simply to be a balance to all of the male pirates. And, since she's pretty much the only woman in the movie, she has a lot of balancing to do. My second gripe is the story arc. The story isn't terribly original, which I can live with. But the director's concern with eye candy leaves one wondering what exactly is happening from time to time. On the plus side, however, the short bit of swordplay that is shown is well choreographed. Also, Depp's interpretation of Jack Sparrow is relaxed and humorous. His goofy way of moving (poorly explained in the movie) reminds me of the movements of the animatronics that are on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. I think that this may have been his influence more than Mick Jagger. Pirate's of the Caribbean is a lot of fun. Disney has captured the elements of the ride and been able to create a movie that is entertaining and visually interesting. Let's hope, however, that the sequel lives up to a PG-13 rating.
