Critic's Grade: A+
An action-comedy along the lines of "Rush Hour" and "Charlie's Angels"
Jake (Chris Rock- Down to Earth) is a street-wise young man who makes his living by playing chess. One day while coming home from "work" he is apporached by C.I.A. agent Gaylord (Anthony Hopkins- Hannibal). There he learns that he has a long lost twin brother he never knew about. He also learns that his brother Michael was also a C. I. A. agent who was killed. They say they pay him $100,000 if he pretends to be his brother and he accepts. The bad part about his taking the job is the fact that he has to get up every morning at 5a.m. He also must change his own personality to fit that of his brother's. When he does he has a series of mishaps trying to convince people that he's a different person. When he checks out his brother's home, he learns that along with him portraying his brother, there is a group of mob-type people who want him dead. When they travel to Paris, "Michael" checks out his new home also to find out that he has a model girlfriend (Garcelle Beauvis-Nilon- TV's The Jamie Foxx Show) and that has more trouble. Now he must race against time to help stop a bomb that can destroy the Earth and stil be able to talk his girlfriend (Kerry Washington- Save the Last Dance).
Actually this movie was a whole lot better than I expected. I thought this was going to be another Chris Rock attempt at adding humor to a film, but it was a really good movie. Rock was absolutely funny and the entire theater was laughing a lot. Hopkins delivered a few good laughs and the action mixed with the humor was a good combonation. The chemistry between the actors was really good and the twists and turns in the plot were totally unexpected. It was directed with both brains and heart to have a great buddy movie.
Rock did a very good job because his last few movies like "Down to Earth" didn't really have a good plot and the jokes were lame, but he returned with a good action movie and was really good. The romance between his and Washington's characters was sweet at times but somewhat dysfunctional.
Along with Hopkins and Rock the film had a lot of good supporting performances. The PG-13: rating is due to the constant language by Rock and the pretty intense action sequences. Also the film includes a few sex jokes that are pretty funny.
The movie was really entertaining and I can't really say anything bad about the film, so out of a possible four stars, I give "BAD COMPANY" a good 3 stars.
